My pepper mills start from big pieces of green lumber.  After chainsaws and bandsaws are brought to bear, I end up with 3″ square lengths of wood that are end-sealed and then air-dried for about 2 years.   It’s more work for me this way, but it also gives me greater creative control in terms of color and grain.  The grinding mechanism is made of brushed stainless steel.  They make a fine upgrade from the mass-produced versions and will be worth passing down to the next generation.
