Amber Pine Bowl With A Flourish

This is a good sized pine bowl (10.5″ wide x 6″ high) and is unexpectedly heavy due to the repeated boiled linseed oil soakings.  Softwoods like pine really draw up the oil.  In addition to the added heft, this saturation causes the walls of the bowl to be quasi-translucent and take on an amber color (see last photo which shows the bowl lit from within).  The most dramatic feature of this bowl, however, is the interplay between the knots and the black streaks.  After the linseed oil is dried — some weeks later — the piece received several top coats of an oil/poly blend.
