Big Blooming Red Cedar Bowl

Cedar trees often grow with deep furrows in their trunks, sort of like the clustered columns in a gothic cathedral.  When you cut a horn shape down the center of such a section of wood, the result is reminiscent of nothing so much as an opening flower.  In this case, the flower is 14″ across.  This piece has wonderful asymmetry in its lobes and some very nice color contrast.  It has been saturated with tung oil and finished to a semi-gloss sheen with many coats of a blended oil finish.  A very nice display piece.
