Big Walnut Bowl

At 2lbs, this nearly 11″ bowl packs a lot of wood. Its thick rim features a slight undulation and a grain feature peculiar to walnut: the hollow pith — that’s the black groove. Usually I avoid the pith or seal it up but this one opened up on the rim and I thought it was a lovely accent. The finish on this is from many, many coats of thin, hand-rubbed shellac. I so much prefer a proper finish to simply soaking in some oil and calling it done. I think the results are very much worth all the extra time and effort.
