Deeply Furrowed Red Cedar Bowl

The large eastern red cedar tree this piece came from was pretty big and had some impressively deep furrows in the trunk. These furrows, in turn, gave rise to the undulating rim and dramatic lobes of this bowl which almost resemble petals of a flower. The deep cranberry color is the standard for red cedar heartwood, and it is set off nicely against the cream-colored sapwood along the top edge. A double raised bead runs around the outside, skipping its way over spots where the bowl is not! The gloss shellac finish was applied by hand in many thin coats.
