Glazed Sage

Here is a 9.5″ diameter red oak bowl. Red Oak is a very porous wood so the grain has lots of texture, but all those pores also give added color to the piece. The inside has had a thin coat of sage color applied to it and then spun out and allowed to settle back toward center a bit. The effect is similar to some pottery glazes. The finish is built up from many coats hand-applied shellac, brought to a glossy sheen.
