Live Edge Russian Olive Bowl

I had never come across Russian Olive wood until last year. A fellow of my acquaintance had a good sized specimen of this ornamental tree that had unfortunately uprooted. I was delighted to get some. The wood was a revelation. It’s similar to black walnut but lighter and with a finer grain and lots of color contrast and detail. This bowl came from a section that had a few branches in the vicinity and so has lovely grain patterns. I left the wall very thick and this gives the bowl a bit of heft. A raised band runs along the outside and in and out of the bark edge. After sanding, I saturated the piece in pure tung oil, which tends to give rippled grain a three dimensional effect, and then put down countless coats of shellac, rubbed to a high gloss. Everything turned out right on this bowl.
