Miro Vase

This form is made from an apple tree that blew over in a windstorm on Halloween, 2018. One of the causes of its demise was doubtless the thousands of woodpecker holes that lined the trunk. These holes create an opening for infection. The tree tries its best to close off those holes and get on with the business of living, but the holes leave dark splotches in the otherwise cream- or brownish-colored wood. These dark patches, as it turns out, are quite decorative, as can be seen in this piece which features them in a pretty random pattern. The effect reminds of some of the art of the surrealist Spanish artist Joan Miro.
