Really Red Oak Showpiece

Sometimes I impress even myself, he said with hopefully some irony. But honestly, I was very pleased with the way this bowl turned out. Humility prevents me from labeling it “stunning,” but it is not my place to restrict the labeling others might do. So have at it. At 6″ high and 9″ wide, it’s a big piece. The lovely rustic bark that runs up and down the rim is echoed by the “bark inclusion” along the bottom of the bowl. The grain around this inclusion is a beautiful swirl, typical of this feature. I live for such grain features. The bright, glossy, transparent red on the outside presents all of the natural grain excitement seen on the inside through, shall we say, rose-colored lenses. The small foot is left natural and the bark inclusion runs right through one edge of it. This bowl is big and deep and has a natural edge and raised band — all qualities that demand skill and time from the craftsperson. I’m always glad when a piece like this is finished. Then I can exhale and enjoy it.
