Red Quilt

This grain is often called quilted. In maple it’s also known as fiddleback. It comes from the crotch of a tree trunk or branch section, that is, where one splits into two. This beautiful grain type always looks good under a layer of transparent color, as in the deep red here. A thin fissure runs along one side. The underside is jet black and the foot and razor-thin rim edge are left natural, setting up a variation in colors that’s quite pleasing, I think.
