Red Tree In Spalted Crabapple

Crabapple is a fairly unusual wood to come across and the log this piece came from had a line of great spalting (the dark lines) on one side. The wood looks and turns just like regular old apple. For this tree I concocted a bright but transparent red base that lets all that spalting show through. The gold bands and faint darker red bands give the piece a nice boost. The fancy-pants finial is decked out in gold, and the base consists of double beads with more dark spalting running through them. All this goodness is locked in by several coats of shellac.
