Small Blue Vase

A simple and delicate vase form, this piece was turned end-grain, which means it would be vertically oriented in the tree. This kind of turning orientation will often lead to differential absorption of colorings such as dyes and, as in this piece, give lighter color in the wide, vertical sections and darker color in the curved sections. The effect can be quite pleasing. After dyeing, this piece was soaked in boiled linseed oil and finished with several coats of oil/urethane varnish.
