Thick & Bright Yew Bowl

This bowl was taken from an old and big yew tree that was unfortunately cut down.  I counted 90 rings in one section of the tree.  The wood is marvelous to work with and this piece of yew offered so much: knots, sapwood, heartwood, bark inclusions, swirling grain patterns and a splashing of dark spots.  It’s a thick-walled number with a prominent lip and enough foot to lift it well clear of the table.  The finish is high gloss — often referred to as “bright” in boating circles — over several coats of tung oil.  At 9″ wide and 5″ high this bowl is big enough to hold its own on a dining room table.
