This is wood from the Landis Arboretum’s “Great Oak” tree, which was a 400-500 year old white oak. For years now, I have been making turnings for donation to the arboretum’s gift shop with this oak whenever something unfortunate happed to the tree, such as a large limb coming down. The tree finally gave up the ghost in 2018 after a long long life. The age estimates puts this tree’s first sprouting at somewhere between the times of Columbus and Shakespeare. It boggles the mind.

An article describing the tree and its late life struggles can be seen here.
